South Padre Island

Ahhhhhh!  Vacation.  Was there ever a nicer, more relaxing, word?  Since we had a three day weekend, the Hubby and I decided to take a spur of the moment trip down to South Padre Island, TX.  We had never been before, and I was missing the beach after 3 years of living in Texas.

Don’t forget Whole Foods for lunch

Sliced beef brisket sandwich

I always forget about the option of Whole Foods for lunch until I am actually there.  They’ve got a pretty awesome to-go section that includes sushi, pizza, BBQ, sandwiches, and more.  Since yesterday was a half day because of Good Friday, the Hubby and I decided to try and catch the free cupcake at Sprinkles (which was Green Tree Vanilla cupcake that looks amazing). On the way to H-Mart

Peanut Chip and Lemon

Peanut Chip and Lemon

I don’t want to give the impression that the Hubby and I eat out ALL the time.  We usually only eat out on the weekends and during the week I will cook and pack bentos for lunch.  Every weekend we make a trip to the grocery store to plan out our meals for the week.  Luckily, I was able to find out the secret word for the free cupcake at Sprinkles before we left and we made a pit stop at the cupcake shop to get our free cupcake (peanut chip!) and an extra one as a bonus.  If you “like” their facebook page they will reveal a secret word of the day and you can get a free cupcake in store. The 99 Ranch is a Chinese grocery store?!

I’m sorry, I would have never guessed that this was a Chinese grocery store from the outside.  Seriously, we pass this place on 75 all the time, and until a few weeks ago, we never even knew what it was.

To be fair, it has no Chinese writing on the outside (as you can see in the picture).  I’ve never heard of the 99 Ranch Market, and the website claims they are the largest Asian grocery store in the country.  I think that’s wrong.  I’ve been in plenty of H-marts and Lottes, and some of them are bigger than this one.  Unless there is a really huge one somewhere else.

So, back to the market.  We pass this place all the time and always wondered what the heck it was.  If you had asked me a month ago, I would have guessed a Mexican grocery store.  Yes, I know that sounds racist.  But, come on!  Look at the thing!  It’s very brightly colored and it’s got a wreath around the 99.  Course, I guess that could also mean some other European country, but we’re also in Texas, so I was going on the assumption that the chances were good that it was Mexican.  Plus, it says “Ranch” in the name.
