The Fig Tree – Romance and Fine Dining

Texas Hill Country Quail

For Valentine’s Day, the Hubby and I decided to take a trip down to San Antonio, TX. We had gone once before for my birthday a few years ago, and really enjoyed eating at a restaurant off the River Walk called the Fig Tree.

On our first night in town we made a reservation for dinner. The Fig Tree is located in La Villita. It has a beautiful view overlooking the San Antonio River with a cozy interior. Advertised as one of the most historic restaurants in San Antonio (along with it’s sister restaurant, the Little Rhein Steak House) it feels like you’re dining in someone’s home.

So, let’s get started on the important stuff–the food.

The waiter brought out bread for the table along with an amuse bouche of fried asiago cheese. The Hubby, not a fan of cheese, bit into it without knowing what it was and regretted it. But, I thought they were amazing. For appetizers, we got the Vol au vent of burgundy snails (see above right) and the Roasted Texas Hill Country Quail Stuffed with Pâté, Black Truffles, Apple Cider Emulsion (picture at top of post).

We had gotten the snails last time and loved them. They were perfect. If you’re a bit squeamish about eating snails, give these a try, the flaky dough with the sauce make them delicious. If it makes you feel better you can pretend they’re mushrooms since they have the same consistency.

For entrees, the Hubby picked the Seared Duck Breast, Leg Confit
Glazed Autumn Vegetables, Bigarade Sauce (so yummy!) and I got Seared Diver Scallops and Rock Shrimp Linguine al burro. While my scallops were tasty, I thought the Hubby’s dish was better.

Then to top it all off we got the banana creme brulee for dessert. Now, they have much more showy desserts which they will flame tableside for you (banana’s foster and baked alaska), and there were plenty of patrons ordering those dishes around us. However, I’m a big fan of creme brulee when it’s done right, and this was definitely right. The banana was a nice touch. Light and not too overpowering.

The Fig Tree is definitely one of my favorite restaurants in Texas. It’s perfect for a romantic night out.
